Is smoking a sin?

The term haram refers to Muslim prohibitions on specific behaviors.

Haram acts are explicitly banned in the holy writings of the Quran and Sunnah and are considered severe prohibitions.

Whatever the motives or goal of an act deemed haram, it remains banned.

The Quran and Sunnah, on the other hand, are ancient books that could not anticipate the problems of modern civilization.

As a result, the fatwa, or different Islamic legal judgments, offers a way to pass judgment on acts and behaviors not explicitly explained or set out in the Quran and Sunnah.

A fatwa is a legal ruling issued by a mufti (a religious law expert) that addresses a specific topic.

This will most likely be a topic involving modern technology and societal advancements, such as cloning or in-vitro conception.

Some equate the Islamic fatwa judgment to a legal ruling of the United States Supreme Court, which interprets laws for specific situations.

On the other hand, a fatwa is viewed as subordinate to the secular laws of society by Muslims residing in western countries—the fatwa is optional for individuals to follow when it contradicts secular laws.

Firstly

Human actions are classified in Islam into the following categories:

  • Without being compulsory or desirable, halal (permissible) is permissible.
  • Fard (required).
  • Mustahab (desirable), but not mandatory.
  • Haram (forbidden).
  • Without being banned, Makruh (undesirable) is allowed.

In Islam, smoking cigarettes is considered haram (forbidden) and a sin.

Perhaps you are aware that all nations of the globe, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, have begun to resist smoking because they recognize how dangerous it is.

Because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) declared, “There should be no harming or reciprocating harm.” Islam condemns everything hurtful.

In the context of talking about Is smoking a sin? We should know that some meals and beverages are valuable and excellent and foods and drinks that are dangerous and terrible.

Our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was characterized by Allah in the following words (interpretation of the meaning):

“He allows them as lawful At Tayyibaat, and prohibits them as unlawful ‘Al Khabaa’ith,’ i.e., all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods).”-(Quran 7:157)

At Tayyibaat, i.e.:

  • All good and lawful as regards things
  • Deeds
  • Beliefs
  • Persons and foods

Al Khabaa’ith, i.e.:

  • All evil and unlawful as regards things
  • Deeds
  • Beliefs
  • Persons and foods

Is smoking a sin? Is smoking one of the excellent and lawful (al-tayyibaat) or the wicked and unlawful (al-khabaa’ith) things?

Secondly, Is smoking a sin?

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is reported to have remarked:

“Allah forbids you to trade gossip, ask too many questions, and waste money.”

And Allah prohibited needless expenditure by saying (interpretation of the meaning):

“And eat and drink but waste not by extravagance. Certainly, He (Allah) likes not ‘Al Musrifoon’ (those who waste by extravagance).”-(Quran 7:31)

And He said of the Most Merciful’s slaves:

“And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes).”-(Quran 25:67)

The whole world now understands that money spent on smoking is squandered, as it is spent on something detrimental.

The money wasted on smoking worldwide might have spared entire communities from famine if it had been collected. Is there anyone stupider than a dollar holder?

Is there anyone dumber than the person who lights a $1 note on fire? What is the distinction between him and the smoker?

Indeed, the smoker is more foolish since the foolishness of the person who burns a dollar note ends there, but the person who smokes burns both his money and his body.

To avoid offending their fellow worshipers, the Prophet (peace be upon him) prohibited people who had eaten garlic or onions from entering the mosque.

The scent of onions and garlic is more tolerable than the smoker’s lips.
