Surah Ghafir – 40:44
Trust Allah and take action
A discussion took place on the issue of trust in Allah (tawakkul) and taking action; the confidence of some of the just is similar to that of Maryam, to whom summer fruits came in winter, and conversely without taking any measure; she focused instead on worship. Please let us know, may Allah bless you.
Praise be to Allaah.
Trusting Allah involves two things:
(i) To depend on Allah and to believe that He is the One who makes sure that the measures are effective; His decree is fulfilled; He has decreed all things, counted and ordained them, may He be glorified and exalted.
(ii) take appropriate measures; Trusting Allah does not mean refraining from taking action; to trust Allah is rather to take appropriate measures and strive to do so. Whoever abstains from doing so is against the laws and decree of Allah. Allah has commanded us to take appropriate action and he encourages us to do so.
He commanded his messenger (blessings and peace be upon him) to do so. Believers are not allowed to refrain from taking appropriate measures;
In fact, he does not really trust Allah unless he takes the appropriate action. Therefore, it is prescribed to get married to have a child and it is recommended to have sex. If someone said:
I will not marry and I will wait to have a child without getting married, he would be considered insane; it is not the way of those who are wise and rational. Similarly, he should not sit at home or at the mosque to solicit charity and wait for provisions to reach him; he should instead strive and work to gain resources in hala.
Maryam (may Allaah have mercy on her) did not give up taking any measures. Allah says to him (interpretation of meaning): “And shake the trunk of date toward you, it will let new ripe dates fall on you”
So she shook the palm tree and took the appropriate measures until the fall of dates. Her action is not contrary to the taking of measures and the fact that she found a provision with her and that Allah honored her and gave her a provision does not indicate that she was refrained from taking appropriate measures; instead she devoted herself to worship and took the appropriate steps.
If Allah grants some of his close friends miracles (karaamaat), it is by His grace and kindness, but that does not indicate that we should give up taking the appropriate measures. There is evidence that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Strive to do what would be good for you, ask Allah for help and do not feel helpless.” Reported by Muslim, 2664 And Allah, whether glorified and exalted, says (interpretation of meaning): “You (alone) worship, and you (alone) ask for help (for everything and for everything)” [al-Faatihah 1: 5].
Sheikh Abd al-Azeze Ibn Baaz (may Allah be merciful to him).
