The Funeral Prayer<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

After washing and wrapping the body in a shroud, the body should be worn where the funeral prayer is to be performed. The funeral prayer takes place in the open air or in a purpose-built place called Janaza Gah. Those present for the funeral service must organize themselves behind the imam.<\/p>\r\n

The number of lines must be odd.<\/p>\r\n

The imam should occupy a position in front of the front row and in the middle, the deceased’s body resting before him. The position of the corpse should be such that the right side of the body is directed towards the Ka’ba<\/a>. The Imam begins the prayer by saying Allahu Akbar, that is to say; Allah is the greatest, strongest.

The followers say the same thing in a low voice. The Imam then recites Thanaa and Surah Fatiha silently. He then says Allahu Akbar without raising his hands. The disciples also say Allahu Akbar but in a low voice. Then the whole congregation recites Durood in silence. After that, the Imam says Allahu Akbar for the third time audibly and the special prayers for the deceased, as given below, are recited. The Imam then says Allahu Akbar for the fourth time and, turning his face to the right, says Assalamo Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah, and turning his face to the left repeats the same thing to mark the end of the prayer.

The followers, too, say Assalamo Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah in a low voice and also turn their faces to the right and to the left.

A funeral prayer in absentia may also be offered to a deceased person, especially to personalities or to a case where few Muslims have offered the original funeral prayer. Offering a funeral prayer to a Muslim is mandatory for the body of all Muslims. It’s called Fardh-i-Kifaya. The rest of the Muslim community is thus exempt from the obligation to perform the funeral prayer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

If the deceased is an adult, a man, or a woman, the following prayer is recited:<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead and those of us who are present and absent, our young and old, and our males and females. O Allah, those to whom you give life, hold them firm over Islam, and those of us whom you kill, let them die in faith.
Do not deprive us, Allah, of the benefits of the deceased and do not submit to a trial after him. (Ibn Maja Kitabul-Janaiz, page 107 of Bab-ud-Dua-Salati al-Janazah).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Some things to note about the Funeral Prayer:<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

There is no Ruku or prostration in the funeral prayer.

Only one funeral prayer can be performed for several people who died at the same time.
If a body is to be transported a considerable distance before the burial, the funeral prayer must be performed before the beginning of the transport. \u00a0 Several funeral prayers can be performed for the same person, usually at two different places. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0

Women can participate in funeral prayer. However, when such a prayer is performed in the cemetery, women are generally advised not to accompany the burial ceremony because of their softer hearts. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
The funeral prayer is not offered to a person who has committed suicide.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
