At Tech In Asia, we’re always looking for unique business models and products that are shaking up old industries. I’m happy to say that this is the one I really like and I’m not even a foodie. It’s PlateCulture.
PlateCulture is a startup based in Malaysia. It allows users to eat home-cooked meals prepared by local cooks. It’s like an Airbnb for food. In other words, it’s the ultimate recipe to disrupt the restaurant industry. Why eat MSG infested restaurant dishes recommended on the questionable old of TripAdvisor when you can get home-cooked food from a beautiful family of your choice?

As you can see in the interface above, users can take interesting dinners or lunches served in Asian cities. So far, the service has been deployed in Malaysia and Singapore and is currently being launched in Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. So, if you are traveling or living in one of these countries and want to try foods that you will not find in any country, PlateCulture is the place to go. According to Audra Pakalnyte, one of the two co-founders of foodie, the startup is the only one of its kind in the region.
So far, in Asia, we are the only ones on the market. In the United States, start-ups – Homedine and Cooking in Europe – are setting up similar markets.
PlateCulture is however quite ambitious. If you go to the site, you will see that they plan to deploy in places as far away as Myanmar and Laos, and developed as Taiwan and Japan. But until now, it’s early enough. The site has served more than 200 meals since its launch in July this year, but the number of users is growing rapidly. It’s really a joy for the PlateCulture team. As gourmets, they were able to take many meals. When I asked Audra what her favorite dish was, she said:

Yes, we have tried the majority of the meals, and it is very difficult to separate which is the preferred one, because at the end of the day, it is not about food, but rather to meet people, to taste the Delicious home cooking and friends from around the world. Every dinner is a unique experience where you have a lot of positive emotions to bring back home.
Although she appreciates it a lot, I think one of the biggest problems with PlateCulture will be that it’s a very new concept. Airbnb had the luxury of relying on a Craigslist culture, as do most sharing economy models. Audra does not pay money to marketing, but hopes that the word of mouth will promote the concept.

The home-based food market is a new concept. However, home dinners and clandestine food clubs have been held for years around the world and in Asia. It is particularly popular in Hong Kong. For every market we go to, including Vietnam, we are preparing a communication message for the media on the trend of home catering, as well as on our start-up. Yet the best way to spread is the world of mouth when people try it out and tell it – then real stories are told.
So far, she has only one person in Vietnam, but she hopes to significantly increase her numbers this year.

Lily Bergamo, the first on PS4 from GungHo and Grasshopper Manufacture, will be released in the United States?
Lily Bergamo, the first PS4 game from developer Grasshopper Manufacture and publisher GungHo Online (which acquired Grasshopper Manufacture earlier this year), looks likely to be sold on next-generation consoles outside Japan. Although no version of the game has yet been announced, with the exception of the Japanese version, the technical blog Siliconera noticed earlier today that Gungho had filed a trademark for the name Lily Bergamo in the United States , a sign that the Japanese game was likely to find its place America. The trademark, filed on September 30, is public information and can be viewed here.
Lily Bergamo is the latest game from Goichi Suda, also known as Suda51. Suda is often considered a cult designer. His portfolio includes games like No More Heroes and Lollipop Chainsaw that have garnered praise and worship but have never really impressed sales. If Lily Bergamo will be the game to change, it remains to be seen. At the Tokyo Game Show, Suda said it would also be possible for players to play in the gaming world on their smartphones, but we can not really know how it will work.
Here is a trailer of the game with simultaneous interpretation in English on the sound of the trailer, so that non-Japanese speakers can follow it. That does not reveal much about the game, which will arrive in Japan in 2014, but I must say of all the little we can see that it seems pretty cool for me.
