Question

What does Islam say about racial discrimination?

Answer

Praise be to Allaah.

All peoples are the descendants of a man and a woman, believer and kaafir, black and white, Arab and non-Arab, rich and poor, noble and humble. Islam does not pay attention to differences in color, race or lineage. All people come from Adam and Adam was created from dust. In Islam, differentiation between people is based on faith (eemaan) and piety (taqwaa), doing what Allah has recommended and avoiding what Allah has forbidden. Allah says (interpretation of meaning):
“O humanity! We created you from a man and a woman and we transformed you into nations and tribes, so that you could know yourself. Verily, the most honorable of you with Allah is this (believer) who has At-Taqwa [i.e. he is one of the Muttaqoon (the gods)]. In truth, Allah is All-Knowing and Conscious.
[Al-Hujuraat 49:13]
With regard to rights and duties, Islam considers all human beings as equals. Men are equal before the law (sharee’ah), as Allah says (interpretation of meaning):
“Whoever practices righteousness – whether man or woman – while he is a true believer (of Islamic monotheism), in truth, we will give him a good life (in this world with respect, contentment and legal disposition), and we will surely pay them a proportional reward for the best of what they were doing (heaven in the hereafter) “[al-Nahl 16:97]
Faith, veracity and piety all lead to paradise, which is the right of one who acquires these attributes, even if he is one of the weakest or the weakest. Allah says (interpretation of meaning):

“And whoever believes in Allah and does good works, he will admit it to the gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise) to abide forever. Allah has indeed given him an excellent supply “[al-Talaaq 65:11]
Kufr, arrogance and oppression lead to hell, even if the one who does these things is one of the richest or the most noble. Allah says (interpretation of meaning):
“But those who disbelieved (in the unity of Allah – Islamic Monotheism) and denied Our Ayaat (proofs, proofs, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they will be the inhabitants of the Fire, to live there in never. And the worst is this destination “[al-Taghaabun 64:10]
The Prophet’s counselors included Muslim men of all tribes, races and colors. Their hearts were filled with Tawhid and they were united by their faith and piety – such as Abu Bakr of Quraysh, ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib of Bani Haashim, Bilaal the Ethiopian, Suhayb the Roman, Salmaan the Persian, rich men like ‘Uthmaan and poor men like Ammaar, rich people and poor people like Ahl al-Suffah and others.
They believed in Allah and fought for him until Allah and his messenger were satisfied with them.
They were the true believers. “Their reward with their Lord is’ Adn (Eden) Paradise (Gardens of Eternity), under which rivers flow. They will remain there forever, Allah will satisfy them and themselves. It is for him who fears his Lord ”
