What is taken from supplication:
Praise be to Allah.
Acknowledgment or gratitude means mutual goodness and praise to one who has done good and good things. The one who deserves the most thanks and praise from the people is Allah, who is glorified and exalted because of the great favors and blessings he has bestowed on his slaves on the spiritual and earthly plane.
Allah has commanded us to thank him for these blessings and not to deny them. He says (interpretation of the meaning): “Therefore, remember me (praying, glorifying). I will remember you and be grateful to you (for my innumerable favors upon you) and never be ungrateful to me “[2: 152]
The greatest who obeyed this order and gave thanks to their Lord until they deserve to be described as shaakir and shakoor (thankful) are the prophets and the messengers (blessings and peace be upon him). Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “In truth, Ibrahim was a Ummah (a ruler with all the qualities of righteousness) or a nation obedient to Allah, Haneef (that is, to worship no one but Allah), and he was not of those who were Al-Mushrikoon (polytheists)., idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah and those who associated themselves with Allah).
(He was) grateful for his favors (of Allah). He (Allah) chose him (as an intimate friend) and guided him to a straight path (Islamic monotheism – neither Judaism nor Christianity) “[16: 120, 121].
“O offspring of those we carried (in the boat) with Nûh (Noah)! In truth, he was a grateful slave “[17: 3]
Allah mentioned some of the blessings he bestowed on his slaves, ordered them to be thankful and told us that few of his slaves thanked him:
Allah says (interpretation of meaning):
1.”O you who believe (in the uniqueness of Allah – Islamic monotheism)! Eat lawful things that We have provided you and be grateful to Allah, if it is the one you worship “[2: 172]
2″And of course, we gave you authority over the land and made provision for you (for your life). Thank you, give yourself “[7:10]
3″And among his signs, he says that he sends the winds as good news, giving you a foretaste of his mercy (ie, rain), and that ships may sail to his order, and that you may seek his good, so that you may be thankful “[31:46]
4 – Among spiritual blessings, he mentions (interpretation of meaning):-
“O you who believe! When you intend to offer As-Salah (prayer), wash your face and hands (forearms) to the elbows, rub your head (passing wet hands) and wash your feet up ankles. If you are in the state of Janaba (that is, after a sexual discharge), purify yourself (bathe your whole body). But if you are sick or traveling, or if one of you comes after answering the call of nature, or if you have been in contact with women (sexual relations) and you can not find of water, perform Tayammum (dry ablution) with Clean the earth and rub your face and hands. Allah does not want to put you in trouble, but he wants to purify you and serve you so that you are thankful “[5: 6].
and there are many other blessings. We only mentioned some of these blessings here; to enumerate them all is impossible, as Allah says (interpretation of meaning): “And he gave you everything you asked for, and if you count Allah’s blessings, you will never be able to count them. In truth, the man is truly an extreme malefactor, a disbeliever (an extreme ingrate who denies the blessings of Allah in unbelief, worshiping other people than Allah and disobeying Allah and his prophet Muhammad ” [2:34 p.m.]
Then Allah blessed us and forgave us our deficiencies by giving thanks for these blessings. He says (interpretation of meaning):
“And if you count Allah’s favors, you will never be able to count them. Verily, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful “[16:18]
The Muslim always asks his Lord to help him thank him, because without Allah’s help to His slave, he could not thank him. This is why it is prescribed in the sunah sahh (Sunnah) (authentic prophetic teachings) to ask the help of Allah to thank him.
It was reported by Mu’aadh ibn Jabal that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) took his hand and said, “O Mu’aah, by Allah I love you, by Allah I love you “. He said, “I advise you, O Mu’aadh, do not fail to follow every prayer to say: O Allah, help me to remember you, thank you and worship you properly.” Reported by Abu Dawood and al-Nasaa’i.
Gratitude for blessings is a cause of their increase, as Allah says (interpretation of meaning): “And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed,” If you give thanks (accepting faith and worshiping only God), I will give you more (of My blessings); but if you are ungrateful (that is, disbelievers), in truth, my punishment is really severe ‘”[14: 7]
How can a person thank his Lord for his great blessings? His gratitude should fulfill all the necessary conditions, namely gratitude of the heart, gratitude of the language and gratitude of the physical faculties.
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Gratitude can be in the heart, in submission and humility; on the tongue, in praise and gratitude; and in the physical faculties, by means of obedience and submission.
Madaarij al-Saalikeen (2/246)
The details of this:
- Heart Gratitude: The heart hears the value of the blessings that Allah has bestowed on his slave and fully recognizes that the one who bestowed these great blessings is Allah alone, without a partner or partner. Allah says (interpretation of meaning):
“And all the blessings and good things you have is from Allah” [16:53].
This acknowledgment is not mustahabb (recommended), it is rather mandatory. Whoever attributes these blessings to anyone other than Allah has disbelieved.
Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Sa’di (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: What a man should do is to bestow blessings on Allah and fully recognize them. Thus, he will reach complete Tawheed. Anyone who denies Allah’s blessings in his heart or on his tongue is a kafir (disbeliever) and has nothing to do with Islam.
Whoever affirms in his heart that all blessings come from Allah alone, but verbally, he sometimes ascribes them to Allah and sometimes attributes them to himself, to his actions or to the efforts of someone else – as it happens on many people. this is something the person must repent of, and should not give any blessing to anyone except his Creator, and he must strive to do so, because the Faith and Tawhid can only be achieved by granting blessings to Allah.
The recognition that is the leader of the faith is based on three pillars: the recognition of the heart of all the blessings that Allah has bestowed on him, as well as others, and speaking of them; praising Allah for them; and using them to obey the One who has blessed and worshiped. Al-Qawl al-Sadeed and Maqaasid al-Tawheed (140)
Allah says, describing the situation of one who denies the granting of blessings to Allah (interpretation of meaning):
“They recognize the grace of Allah, but they deny it (worshiping others besides Allah) and most of them are unbelievers (deny Muhammad’s prophecy)” [16:83].
Ibn Katheer (may Allah be merciful to him) says: that is to say, they recognize that Allah is the one who gives them this and He is the one who gives them this favor, but in spite of that, they deny it, worship others next to him and attribute victory and provision to someone other than himself. Tafser Ibn Katheer (4/592).
2- As for the gratitude of the tongue, it means to recognize verbally – after believing in the heart – that the one who bestows the blessing is really Allah, and keep the tongue full of praise to Allah, may He be glorified and exalted.
Allah says, explaining his blessings to his slave Muhammad (blessings and peace be upon him): “He found you poor and made you rich (self-sufficient with self-satisfaction)?” [93: 8]. Then he reminded him in return for this: “And proclaim the grace of your Lord (that is, the Prophethood and all other graces)” [al-Duha 93:11].
Ibn Katheer (may Allah be merciful to him) says: that is to say, as you were poor and in need, Allah made you rich and independent of all means: so speak of the blessing of Allah that is bestowed upon you.
Tafser Ibn Katheer (8/427).Anas ibn Malik recounted: Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allah is satisfied with a person who eats food and then leases it, or drinks a glass, and then rents it for that. ” Reported by Musulman
Abu’l-‘Abbas al-Qurtubi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Praise here means gratitude, and we have seen above that praise can replace gratitude, but that gratitude may not take the place of praise. This indicates that gratitude for the blessings – even if they are few – is a way to reach the pleasure of Allah, that He is exalted, which is the noblest situation of the people of Paradise. When the people of paradise say, “You have given us what you have not given to anyone among your creation,” Allah will say to them, “Will I not give you something better than this?” he? Have you not enlightened our faces and admitted to heaven and saved from hell? He will say, “I give you my pleasure, and I will never be angry with you after that. “
Gratitude is a means of attaining this great honor, because it involves the recognition of the lessor and recognizing him alone as the creator of this blessing and the one who reaches out to the recipient of the blessing, as an honor and favor of it. and that the recipient of the blessing is poor and needs it, and can not do without it. It is therefore a recognition of the rights and goodness of Allah, as well as the duty and the need of the slave. So Allah made the reward of this recognition to be this great honor.
Al-Mufhim lima ashkala min Talkhees Kitaab Muslim (7/60, 61). This is why some salafs (righteous predecessors) declared: Whoever conceals a blessing has denied it, but the one who manifested it and spread it gave thanks.
Ibn al-Qayyim commented on this: This is based on the words: “When Allah bestows a blessing on a person, he loves the effect of his blessing to be seen on his slave.” Madaarij al-Saalikeen (2/246). Omar ibn Abd al-Azeez (may Allah be merciful to him) said: Remember blessings is gratitude.
3 – The gratitude of the physical faculties means using one’s physical powers to obey Allah and to prevent them from committing sins and acts of disobedience forbidden by Allah.
Allah says (interpretation of meaning): “Work with you, the family of Dawood (David)!” [34:13]
Aishah said, “When Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) pray, he would stand so long that his feet were swollen. ‘Aishah said: O Messenger of Allah, are you doing this when Allah has forgiven your past and future sins? He said, “O Aishah, should not I be a grateful slave?” Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
Ibn Battaal (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Al-Tabari said: The correct opinion about this is that the person’s gratitude is to affirm that it comes from Allah and no one else, and the affirmation of this fact is an action, confirmed by this action. As for the affirmation contradicted by the action, he who does so does not deserve to be called grateful at all. But this can be called gratitude of the language. The proof that this is true is the words of Allah (interpretation of meaning): “Do you labor, family of Dawood (David), with thanks!” [34:13]. It is well known that He did not command them, when he told them that, to give his blessings, because they did not deny that it was a favor on his part. He instead commanded them to give thanks for his blessings by obeying him in their actions. Likewise, the Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and peace be upon him), when his feet swelled while he was praying at night, said, “Should not I to be a grateful slave? Sharh Saheeh al-Bukhaari.
Abu Haroon said: I entered Abu Hazim and told him: May Allah have mercy on you, what is the gratitude of the eyes? He said: If you see something good with them, you talk about it, and if you see something bad with them, you hide it. I said: What is the gratitude of the ears? He said: If you hear something good with them, you remember it, and if you hear something wrong with them, you forget it.
Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Gratitude is two degrees, one of which is obligatory, that is to say, to make obligatory actions and to avoid unlawful things (haram). This is essential and sufficient as gratitude for these blessings.
So, one of the salaf said: Gratitude means to give up sin.
And one of them said: Gratitude means not using a blessing to help someone to disobey.
Abu Hazim al-Zahid mentioned the gratitude of all physical faculties: (It means) to abstain from sinning and use them to help someone to perform acts of obedience. Then he says: As for the one who gives thanks with his tongue but does not do it with all his physical faculties, his face is that of a man who has a coat and who takes the edge, but does not put He does not is therefore no help against cold, heat, snow or rain.
The second degree of gratitude is what is mustahabb, which is the moment when, after performing obligatory actions and avoiding haram things, a person performs supererogical acts of worship. This is the degree of those who have gone forth and closer to Allah. Jaami ‘al-‘Uloom wa’ l-Hukam (p 245, 246)
Summary: In order to be grateful to your Lord for the blessings he has bestowed on you, you must acknowledge in your heart that the giver of these blessings and the funder is Allah, that He is exalted, so that you venerate Him. that you attribute it. and you recognize him with your tongue, so that you thank him after you have risen from sleep for giving new life, and after eating and drinking for having provided you with them and granted on you, and so on with every blessing you see in your life.
You give thanks with your physical faculties by not allowing them to see or hear a sin or an evil, like a song or gossip; you do not walk with your feet to go to places; you do not use your hands to hurt, such as writing a haram in a relationship with a non-mahram woman (a woman you can marry in accordance with Islamic law), nor writing contracts with haram, or doing anything or doing anything . To thank with the physical faculties the physical blessings also implies to use them to obey Allah, reading the Qur’an and the books of knowledge, listening to the beneficial and useful things, etc. with all the faculties you should use in various types of obedience and worship.
Remember that gratitude for blessings is a blessing that deserves to be thanked, so that we may continue to enjoy the blessings of our Lord, thanking His Lord for these blessings and congratulating Him for having helped Him to be one of those who give thanks.
We ask Allah to be exalted, to help us and to do what he likes and likes. And Allah knows better.
