Method 1.

The optimal method to memorize the Qur’an from the best of my personal experience

1. Get a good copy of the Quran (a Mushaf )

Get a copy that is sized to your preferences and never changes it. Stick to what you will be able to save parts of pages and lines when memorizing. The copy known as” Mushaf al-Huffadh ” (the copy of memorizers) is preferred when a page begins with a verse and ends at the end of a verse, and is thus very well divided, the Koran being thirty parts, each part has 20 pages and each page has 15 lines. It is printed by the organization of King Fahd of Madinah Al-Munawwarah. I advise to get it because it is the most accurate contemporary impression.

2. Creation of the session

Place the scene for memorization according to the following:

  • Quiet self (psychological) – this is to give rise to an intention of good will and desire for reward from Allâh.
  • Wudu` (lighting cleaning) and complete purity – do not take the opposite view. Such a decree goes against what suits the high consideration of the word of Allah and behavior towards it.
  • Sitting in a place where you feel comfortable (body, mind and soul), and there is no sacred place like the mosque.
  • It is better that it is a place without many photos, sculptures, decorations and entertainments. The more enclosed the place – as far as fresh air is concerned-the better, the better, than open spaces with trees and gardens. Some may disagree with me on this point, but I say this on the basis of experience and not abstract thought. The atmosphere of light reading is different from that of focused memorization, as wide spaces, landscapes and trees distract mind and concentration. Everything that is suitable for light reading is not necessary for real work and concentration, as mentioned in principle four (previously discussed on the environment for memorization).
  • Facing the Qibla-sitting in a state of desire, tranquility and calm.

3. Start with a warm-up

It is a preparation in which you first read the pages of the Qur’aan before you start memorizing them, whether it be from memory or from looking at them. Recite well, listen to yourself without haste or delay. This is a fundamental part of your preparation. You will find many memorization teachers who do not allow the student to memorize before having them revise the previous session and listen to it. It is to prepare him psychologically and spiritually for memorization, while the student may be totally ignorant of the teacher to the goal.

4. Reciting with awareness and control

Be wary of the beauty of your voice so you don’t distract yourself at this point. In this, the sweetness of your melody engulfs you in the thrills of the Rapture. So you begin to think that you are such and such, the famous reciter, then you assume his character and you begin to recite with deliberation and perfecting the letters. You repeat it and recite it again like some of the reciters. Maybe everything goes above and you bring a microphone and recording equipment. Time goes by when you don’t know, and you become like this young man who really wanted to memorize the Koran, but every time he sat down to memorize, he opened the Koran to Sūrah Yūsuf and started to recite it until time passed and he memorized absolutely nothing.

5. Developing a strong desire

After 10 to 15 minutes of warm-up and personal preparation, you should feel a strong desire to memorize, with this it is possible to start with a new page that you want to memorize.

6. Focus!

Here begins an important step, you really need to focus strongly on the verses. Imagine that your eye is a camera lens and you want to film the page with sound and image. Careful not to shake the camera.

7. Open your eyes.

Free your mind from distraction. Recite by looking at the first verse at the top of the page of an audible voice with Tajwīd. Read correctly with concentration. Let us take as an example his statement, the highest:

سيقول السفهاء من الناس ما ولاهم عن قبلتهم التي كانوا عليها قل لله المشرق والمغرب يهدي من يشاء الى صراط مستقيم

And the fools will say, ” what has taken them away from their Qiblah, which they had before?Say: the East and the West belong to Allah alone. Guide whoever he wants to the right way.”[2:142]

Read it three times or more until your mind takes it all, then close your eyes and picture in your mind with the places of the words and read them. If you can read them completely without any mistakes, don’t get excited, but repeat them two, three or five times.

8. Repetition

Then open your eyes a second time. Read the same verse on the page to confirm the accuracy of your memorization. If you’re sure you memorized it correctly, don’t get carried away. Instead, close your eyes, and read it another time. With this, you have engraved in your mind an engraving that is impossible to disappear with the permission of Allah, the most high. Try the steps carefully, you will certainly find this sound approach.

Note:

During the recall and rehearsal process, make sure you do not look away at things around you, such as written posters distributed on walls, posters, artwork or decor. Do not follow a swirling fan. Don’t worry about the type of furniture or floor coverings you’re sitting on. Be careful not to look through the windows too much, maybe your eyes will fall on something that will not please you, or maybe you will be distracted by the scene of people in the street, or the scene of cars as happens to students when they review for their exams. One of them stands at the window with the excuse of getting fresh air, then there he takes a census of cars based on make and model, and in this way time passes and is wasted when he has not benefited from only one thing.

You have nothing to do with these distractions, brother (or sister). You have presented yourself as one of the people of the Koran and its memorizers, and this requires motivation, perseverance, concentration and a lack of distractions.

9. Move on to the next verse

After moving on to the next verse he…

…وكذلك جعلناكم أمة وسطا

And in the same way (O Muslims) we have made you the best ummah (community—just for all with a tolerant, moderate and balanced attitude) [2: 143]]

… and start with the same steps we described in the previous verse. If you think the verse is long, then divide it into several parts corresponding to the correct and audible stops and normal meanings. Then repeat and repeat several times until it is etched deep into your memory.

10. Connecting the verses

Now begins the connection process that I mentioned in the eighth principle of memorization (previous chapter). Open the page and focus on the last part of the first verse-for example-على صراط مستقيم …and read it in a loud voice, then connect it quickly and continuously with the first part of the second verse وكذلك جعلناكم أمة وسطا. Repeat this process several times, but no less than five times.

After reading these steps – if you like them-start immediately to implement them and record in a notebook the date of this memorization. Contact someone you love and trust, and then tell them that you have found a technique in memorizing the Qur’an that you have begun to apply today so that you can be a guide to the good.

One of the advantages of contacting someone like that is that it will be an encouragement to you in memorizing and pursuing, as it reflects an increased conviction in itself with what you have read.

This is what is confirmed in psychology if a person does something and he persuades someone else about it, then it is like taking a firm position without deflecting from him and his behavior increases his conviction in what he does.

To summarize this method (the method is) in the following steps:

  • Personal composure
  • Warming up
  • Concentration
  • Repetition
  • Connecting verses

Result = strong memorization with the best method.
