First tragedy of Bomba community, tragic unit of divers in history

SERDANG (Bernama): The tragedy of six divers at the Fire and Rescue Department (JPBM) Sea Rescue Unit (PPDA) who drowned during a search and rescue operation (SAR) ) is the first in the history of the department.
JPBM Chief Executive Mohammad Hamdan Wahid told a meeting at Serdang Hospital that prior to this search and rescue operation, there were few fatal incidents involving firefighters.
“This is the first time that six staff members have died.There was a previous case where we lost two members of the department.
“We did the CPR but we could not save them and it was a very sad day for us, that day involved so many of our employees,” he said.
Six PPDA divers died on Wednesday, October 3, at 9:15 pm, while conducting a search and rescue operation following a teenager who fell in a disused mining pond at Taman Putra Perdana, near Puchong, and feared to be drowned.
Mohammad Hamdan said JBPM would look into all aspects of the welfare of the victims’ families, including compensation and insurance.
He added that the Forensic Department of Serdang Hospital is currently performing autopsies on all victims.
After the completion of the autopsies, all remains would be taken to the Shah Alam Fire and Rescue Station for the final homage before being taken home to their hometown.
The six divers who drowned were identified as 34-year-old Mohd Fatah Hashim, Izatul Akma Wan Ibrahim, 32, Mazlan Omarbaki, 25, and Yahya Ali, 24, of the station’s water rescue team. Fire and Rescue of Port Klang.
The other two victims, identified as Adnan Othman, 33, and Muhammad Hifdzul Malik Shaari, 25, were members of the PPDA team at the Shah Alam Fire and Rescue Station.
He added that the victims were from Sibu (Sarawak): Tawau, Sabah; Kelantan; Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan and Shah Alam, Selangor.
Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin and Balakong MP Wong Siew Ki were also in the hospital comforting the family members of the victims.
Shamiza Salleh, 32, wife of Adnan Othman, said she received a call about the tragedy at 11 pm “Her friend (Adnan) informed me of what had happened, I was at home at that time,” she said.
She broke down after that and was unable to say anything else. – Bernama
