For Muslims, prostrating themselves before Allah and prostrating themselves several times a day during daily prayer is a key element of their faith. There are fifteen verses in the Qur’an that praise those who “bow to Allah”. For Muslims, thus showing humility to Allah in this way is what separates believers from unbelievers. By reading the verses listed below, Muslims should make an additional prostration to show their willingness to humble themselves before Allah. This act is called “sajdat al-tilaawah” (prostration of recitation).
The Prophet Muhammad said: “When the son of Adam (ie human beings) recites a verse of prostration and prostrates himself, Satan withdraws, crying and saying,” Woe to me … the Adam’s son was commanded to bow down, and he worshiped, so heaven will be his; I was ordered to prostrate myself and I refused, so hell is mine. “
Convenient practice for Muslims reading verses
When you read the verses or listen to a recitation, it is recommended to bow down once after reading one of these verses. However, it is not an obligation to do so and it is not a sin to omit this practice.
When praying at the recitation of such a verse, the devotee should say “Allahu Akbar” and move directly from the standing position to the prostration, without bending between the two. After a supper, the worshiper says: “Allahu Akbar” gets up and continues the prayer. If you pray behind an imam, you should only do sujood al-tilaawah if the imam does it.
Listening to or reading the Qur’an outside of prayer, one should say “Allahu Akbar” and simply kneel down on the floor and be subdued by reaching one of these verses. According to most scholarly opinions, it is not necessary to be woudou in the face of the qiblah, nor completely / modestly dressed for this prostration, as the prayer requires. However, it is advisable to treat this prostration with the same respect and humility.
For what verses should we do Sajdah al-Tilaawah?
The locations of these verses are marked in the Arabic text of the Qur’an (mus-haf) with a symbol in the form of mihrab. The fifteen verses are:
Certainly, those who are with your Lord (the angels) are never too proud to give him acts of worship, but they glorify his praise and prostrate themselves before him. (Quran 7: 206)
And to Allah (alone) falls in the prostration of whoever is in the heavens and on the earth, of his own free will or not, and so of the shade in the morning and the afternoon. (Quran 13:15)
And to Allah prostrate all that is in heaven and all that is on the earth, living creatures in motion and angels, and they are not proud. (Quran 16:49)
Say: “Believe in Him (the Qur’an) or do not believe, verily those to whom knowledge had been given before, when recited to them, fall on their faces in humble prostration.” (Quran 17: 107)
… When they recited the verses of the Most Merciful (Allah), they prostrated themselves and cried. “(Quran 19:58)
Do you not see that Allah proscribes all that is in heaven and on earth, as well as the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, all living things, and many humans? (Quran 22:18)
Oh you who believe! Bow down and prostrate, worship your Lord and do good for you to succeed. (Quran 22:77) * This verse is disputed as a verse of sajdah by some scholars. There are unconfirmed reports that the early Muslims actually made this verse, but others cite a lack of evidence. So some scholars count it, others do not.
And when they are told, “Welcome to the most generous (Allah)!” They say, “And what is the most generous?” Shall we sink into prostration in the face of what you tell us (O Muhammad)? And that only increases their dislike. “(Quran 25:60)
Satan has forbidden them access to Allah, so that they do not worship
(prostrate before) Allah who brings to light what is hidden in the heavens and the earth and knows what you hide and what you reveal. (Quran 27:25)
Only those who believe in Our signs and who, when we remind them of a person, fall prostrate, glorify the praises of their Lord and are not proud. (Quran 32:15)
… and Dawood (Prophet David) guessed that We had tried it and he asked his Lord for forgiveness. He prostrated himself and turned to Allah in repentance. (Qur’an 38:24)
And among his signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Do not bow to the sun or the moon, but bow to the one who created them, if you worship him (really). “(Quran 41:37)
So fall in prostration before Allah and worship him (Alone). (Quran 53:62)
And when the Qur’an is recited to them, they do not fall prostrate. (Quran 84:21)
… Fall prostrate and approach Allah! (Quran 96:19)
