What is forgiveness?
Psychologists generally define forgiveness as a conscious and deliberate decision to release feelings of resentment or revenge toward a person or group that has wronged you, whether or not they deserve your pardon.
It is just as important to define what forgiveness is, but to understand what forgiveness is not. Experts who study or teach forgiveness make it clear that when you forgive, you do not neglect or deny the seriousness of an offense with which you are charged. Forgiveness does not mean forgetting, nor should one tolerate or condone offenses. Although forgiveness can help to repair a damaged relationship, it does not require you to reconcile with the person who harmed you, nor to free you from legal liability.
Instead, forgiveness reassures forgiveness and frees it from corrosive anger. There is a debate about whether true forgiveness requires positive feelings about the offender, but experts agree that it implies at least giving up deep-seated negative feelings. In this way, it allows you to recognize the pain you have suffered without this pain defining you, allowing you to heal and continue your life.
While early research focused on individuals’ forgiveness of others, new areas of inquiry are beginning to examine the benefits of collective forgiveness and self-forgiveness.
